I believe to be more common but still quite scarce. |

#206, fine, sound, tied by WASHINGTON D.C. numeral 6 double oval
killer on VF intact unsealed circular Newburgh N.Y., forwarded to
Cornwall, NY. At Newburgh the addressee was not found, the post
office applying its APR 9 postmark and a red "POSTAGE DUE FOR
FORWARDING" and manuscript "1¢" (the required fee for forwarding
of third class mail),sending it on to Cornwall. There the post
office applied a 1¢ #J15 postage due stamp (VF, sound) over the
forwarding directive, canceling it with its gray blue target killer
duplexed to a CORNWALL, Orange Co., N.Y. APR 10 serrated double oval
county name postmark (Doane-Thompson 2699). The circular
letter's content is from "Milo B. Stevens & Co. Military and Naval
Claim Attorneys". Envelope bears the printed directive, "If the
person addressed is not found, please deliver to any Union Soldier."
Very nice postage due usage. |

canceled a 1¢ #J15 postage due (the required charge for return of
third class mail). Terrific markings for returned circular mail. |

#W131, VF 2 cent
Jackson wrapper entire, opened
for display. The wrapper was sent to Paris, France from New
York, where it received a black cork killer, and red NEW YORK PAID JUL 1 exchange office postmark and red boxed "PD" front and back. Front bears a red "ETATS-UNIS CHERBOURG 12 JUL 75 receiver. Cover sent to Smith Owen c/o N. F. Fenwick, No. 8 Rue St.
George, Paris (blue oval receiver on reverse). Address penned out
and a new address for Smith Owen c/o Messrs. Rob't Thode & Co., Banker, Dresden,
Germany applied on reverse where a green 5 centime Ceres head stamp
canceled JUL 13 has been applied for forwarding postage. Unfortunately, the wrapper has lost a (presumed) 1 cent
Banknote stamp that was positioned just below the wrapper indicia
and would have just been canceled by the cork killer. The missing
stamp would have completed the 3 cent newspaper rate to France.
Nevertheless, this is an extremely scarce example of a foreign destination wrapper forwarded to a
second foreign destination. |
