Peirce in Manila, Philippines Islands. Cover front bears a Robert B. Storer merchant blue oval hand stamp and manuscript directive "Via Marseilles", red crayon "36" credit, bold "1d" British Colonial credit hand stamp, red London Paid date stamp (Dec. 24), and "2" due hand stamp applied in Philippines. Reverse bears red "Boston Br. Pkt. Paid Dec. 13" (1862) circular date stamp, "HONG KONG C FE 11 63" transit and "Manila Iss. Filips. 15 Feb. 1863" receiver back stamp. Stamps lifted and expertly hinged, nevertheless a rare and gorgeous cover. 1994 PFC "Genuine usage". The cover's contents (PDF transcription) is fascinating, extensively discussing war news, mentioning the bombardment of Fredericksburg, the South's pirate privateer Alabama, the construction and guns of the Monitor ironclads, and other details of war matters. [Following is from R. A. Siegel Auctions Galleries lot description.] VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL THREE-COLOR COMBINATION FRANKING TO THE PHILIPPINES. George H. Peirce came to the Philippines from New England as a 19-year old clerk in the firm of Peele, Hubbell & Company. By 1862 he was responsible for buying one-third of all the abaca exported from the Philippines. In 1868 he became a partner in the firm. The Peirce correspondence began to leak out into the marketplace in the 1980s, and in 1994 the auction sale of 29 Peirce covers, under the name "The Manila Find," was held by H. R. Red "BOSTON BR. PKT. 40 SEP 16" 40¢ credit datestamp, sender's directive "via England p. Africa" (Cunard steamer from New York to Queenstown, dep. Sep. 16, arr. Sep. 25), and red LONDON PAID SP 26 63 receiver on front. Red "BOSTON BR. PKT PAID SEP 16", red "CAPE TOWN CAPE OF GOOD HOPE NO 10 1863" and oval "PORT ELIZABETH NO 14 1863" transit and receiving back stamps. 2017 PFC mentions 30¢ with two [barely visible] small vertical tears at top. (Left and right stamps additionally canceled by pen strokes, small perf faults.) Stamps pay the 30¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate only to the German-Austrian Postal Union, cover traveling via the Cunnard steamer "Europa", arriving Liverpool 15 FEB. Cover bears a red "N. YORK 7 BR PKT PAID FEB 3" exchange office postmark reflecting a 7¢ credit to Prussia, boxed "AACHEN 17-2 FRANCO", and boxed "Franco Pruess: / resp: Vereinsl: Ausg: Gr." indicating letter paid only to the GAPU. Red crayon due for additional Swiss postage. Letter arrived Aarau 20 FEB (back stamp). Attractive cover.	$300

Cover front bears red London receiver, red crayon "110" credit (22¢ credit in centimes per GPU/UPU regulations), and JA 21 76 CAPETOWN CAPE COLONY receiver, and JA 24 76 Port Elizabeth receiver on back. Cover has mild horizontal bend through address and small edge tear at top, but is still VF intact and attractive.	SOLD

The letter was sent to forwarding agent Munroe & Co., Paris, and apparently forwarded to Russia. The cover is docketed "Rec'd Sept. 12 1874, St. Petersburg" at left. Attractive and scarce usage.	$60
