#64 pink,
fine, sound copy,
tied by grid killer on intact (flap tear) small embossed lady's
envelope, sent to Shrewsbury, Mass. Initially mailed and postmarked
COLLEGE HILL OHIO SEP 9 (DPO
Hamilton County 1849-1892), the cover arrived in Greensburg,
Indiana, where it was marked with a manuscript
"Missent" and
received a GREENSBURG
IND SEP 10 1861 forwarding postmark (Decatur County
1823-). 2024
PFC notes
a horizontal cover crease (not affecting the adhesive) and perf
toning (truly trivial). It also mistakenly identifies the
Greensburg postmark date as SEP 9. A
nice and interesting early use example of the pink variety. |

#65, average,
tiny perf faults, canceled by a VF-XF
strike of very rare blue "all seeing eye" fancy killer (Skinner-Eno
FR-NMb 6) and tied by WASHINGTON,
IND. AUG 14 postmark on VF cover barely reduced at
right. The front of the cover has a minor bend passing below
the stamp and some toning or reverse. While the bend is visible
on the stamp, the stamp itself appears to be without crease. The
cover is addressed to Lizzie Smith, Dillsburg, York Co., PA.
Virtually all known on-cover examples of this killer are from
this correspondence. In the 2022 H. R. Harmer Erivan Auction 7,
an instance of this cover described as "lightly cleaned and
stamp with a faint stain, extremely fine appearance" sold for
$5900 including buyer's commission. Harmer's 2023 Erivan
Auction 8 included another example (stamp described "with light
toned spot") selling for $6490 including commission. A
wonderful example of this rare fraternal imagery fancy cancel at
a very reasonable price. |

#65, fine, tied
by an XF-superb
strike of crossed arrows fancy killer, CAMBRIDGE, N.Y., NOV 16
postmark on
fresh cover, 2021
PFC. This
is a spectacular, unlisted fancy cancel and the only example
that I have been able to locate in literature or auction
catalogs. The cancellation consists of two separate,
neatly crossed strikes of a fancy arrow killer, which is
apparent when the two individual strikes are
photographically displayed side by side.
This possibility is consistent with the fact that the postmark
and killer are not duplexed. This would allow the postmaster to
express his artistry by "crossing" his neatly carved arrow
killer. (I wonder if there was anything special about the
addressee of this cover that would have induced this special
effort.)
It is obviously an early strike. By its delicate nature, this
killer would likely remain intact but a short time.
The cover is reduced 1cm at left with a repaired lower left
corner, the stamp with a tiny tear at right. A
rare fancy cancellation for the finest collection. |
