LS. S.B. LINE AUG 5" double circle postmark, manuscript "For Reverd. Mother Angela Notre Dame University" delivery directive.  Cover neatly opened at left, bottom left corner edge chipped, still Very Fine and a very scarce route agent marking. $700
9822 (Milgram 137, illustrated p. 138)  BOSTONA No. 3., S.B.R. [steam boat route], JULY 1 (Ohio River), two strikes of this oval hand stamp, a clear, well struck one ties VF 1861 3¢ #65 (natural straight edge at left, trivial corner crease) on canary cover to Cincinnati, Ohio.  Very slightly reduced at top, small part of flap removed, still VF and attractive, the only recorded example. $450
9823 (Milgram 219, illustrated p. 169)  Steamer CHIEFTAIN (Monongahela River), blue oval ties VF 1867 3¢ grill (#94, small defects) with natural straightedge at left, on cover to Salem Conn., light horizontal cover fold, F-VF, a very rare marking, ex-Somdal. $150

CITY OF CLEVELAND (Great Lakes), well struck large oval ties $26 1857 3¢ (design trimmed at bottom) on intact cover to Detroit, Mich., light strike of "DETROIT, Mich Oct 7" cds with integral "3 PAID" receiving postmark and "STEAM BOAT" in ribbon, flap torn, F-VF, a rare marking, particularly when tying an adhesive. $375

STACY (Mississippi and Ouachita Rivers), VF fancy red oval on 1852 folded letter to New Orleans, franked with 1851 3¢ Dull Red (11A, four margins, toned) canceled by grid with red "NEW ORLEANS, LA. NOV 21" cds and black "STEAM" straight line hand stamp, Very Fine. $400

9828 (Milgram 702)  From STEAMER J.M. RELF (Mississippi River), complete red oval hand stamp on VF and fresh folded letter to New Orleans, franked with bright, sound 1851 3¢ Dull Red (11A, 3 margins, slightly in at left) not tied by manuscript marking, light horizontal file fold.  Also included is 1855 printed freight bill.  Very Fine and attractive. $275

9829 (Milgram 772, illustrated p. 419)  STEAMER LATONA (Mississippi and Ouachita Rivers), bold and complete black octagonal boxed hand stamp on folded letter to New Orleans, franked with 1851 3¢ Dull Red (11) tied four bar grid, vertical file fold and manuscript ink smear at left. Very Fine, a lovely strike of this steamboat marking which is typically found in red and on stampless covers. Ex-Somdal. $400
9830 (Milgram 1109)  STEAMBOAT PIOTA (Mississippi & Red Rivers), bold and complete strike of ornate red oval hand stamp on VF intact folded letter to Bertie, N.C., franked with 1851 3¢ Dull Red (11A, tiny defect), tied by black grid with red "NEW ORLEANS, La. MAY 23" cds, black straight line "WAY" hand stamp alongside.  Also included is 1856 printed freight bill. Very Fine. $375

9831 (Milgram 1198, illustrated p. 609)  STEAMER RIVER QUEEN Sept 17 1864 (Narragansett Bay), an exceptionally bold and complete fancy cross hand stamp ties 1861 3¢ Rose (65) on essentially intact cover to Newport R.I., manuscript "due 2 cts" (a 1 cent doubling of the 1 cent shortage to pay the 4 cent drop letter rate for delivery to port of entry), minor ink stain.  Also included is original enclosure and printed, illustrated 1864 freight bill (with neat Steamer River Queen Aug 24 1864 cds), Very Fine and choice, ex-Cowdrey & Gallagher.  A WONDERFUL COVER WITH THIS FANCY HANDSTAMPED STEAMER MARKING. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE.

The "River Queen" was Grant's dispatch boat during the final year of the Civil War. It was used for a meeting between Lincoln and Alexander Stevens, C.S.A. Vice President, and for several visits to the troops thereafter.
