#158, fine, tied by N. YORK STEAMSHIP JUN 13
postmark on cover to Troy NY, blue "7 c" crayon and "Due 7"
for ship letter charge for delivery beyond port of entry, small
reduction at right. The original letter datelined May 25 1875,
Port au Prince Haiti, from an officer of the USS Shawmut
accompanies. (The Shawmut saw service as a gunboat in the North
Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and served along the Atlantic seaboard
until decommissioning in 1877.) The letter (pp.
1-4, pp. 2-3,
transcription) contains a
fascinating account of the officer's time in Haiti, where they
had been temporarily sent "for protection of American citizens" on
the ship's eventual Honduras destination. The account includes
his visit to the presidential "palace" to meet the Haitian
president, and his general views about Haiti as a "dreadful place".
A terrific historical item. |
