fold at left, letter datelined APR 4, 1829, New Orleans, XF red arched "MAIL ROUTE" of New York, manuscript 12½ cent rate (the additional 2 cent ship
fee not reflected), private ship letter sent to New York, manuscript
steamer name "Kentucky". Scarce marking.
(Explanation of this short-lived, 1827-30, "implied under
contract" special treatment of such mail can be found in American Stampless Cover Catalog Vol. II, p.88.) Four similar examples bearing this marking
sold in H. R. Harmer sale 3064 (lots 4002-5, March 29, 2023) at prices
ranging from $250-$300 plus commission. Great value!

between 2 line postmark, 3.8 (dwt.gr) manuscript rate, letter to Baltimore, MD. Letter is datelined Hanover Town 15th March 1787, a very early use. I believe that the rating of this cover is
comprised of two additive rates: 1 dwt 8 gr for the trip from Hanover Town
to Richmond plus 2 dwt for the second leg to Baltimore. ASCC (1985)
value, $350. A gorgeous early stampless item.

SFL bearing an XF strike of very scarce red SHAWNEETOWN., ILL., MAR 24 (1831) double
oval postmark, a double
weight (manuscript 20) cover to the clerk of the Circuit Court of White
County, Illinois. Old Shawneetown is located in
southeastern Gallatin County. (Shawneetown
moved to its current location after extensive flooding in 1937.) It
is one of the earliest settlements in Illinois, serving as an important
U.S. government administrative center for the Northwest Territory. Shawneetown and Washington, D.C., share the distinction
of being the only towns chartered by the United States government.
Letter sheet has some inking on reverse and is missing one of its pages.
