Item # Description Price Picture
j0108 #136A, 2 I grill copies, one SE, small perf faults, tied by VF "NEW YORK P.O. MAY 5" postmark and 8-prong rosette killer on small unreduced cover (small part flap missing) to Prussia. Cover also has red "NEW YORK MAY 7" exchange office postmark and matching "PD" [paid to destination] in oval. The applied postage was apparently intended to pay the 6 cent NGU direct rate, but the cover instead went via NGU closed mail (7 cents), traveling on the HAPAG steamer "Thuringia" leaving May 7 and arriving Plymouth May 17. Noting the short paid postage, the receiving clerk applied a blue crayon "5" [5 centime, 1 cent shortage], underlined "Berlin" in the address, scratch out the "PD" and stamped the cover "PAID-ONLY TO ENGLAND" (very scarce marking). The cover's original letter dates 1873 verifying the applicable rates. A wonderful example of the handling of short paid mail. SOLD
j0109 #158, VF, sound, smudge cancel, on intact small cover, minor edge wear, bearing a typical, yet VF strike of large "FORT REID Fla." dateless, hand-carved postmark. This town is a DPO listed by Helbock as "Fort Reed", Seminole County, open 1873-1903 (R4 scarcity). The original letter is datelined "Fort Reid Orange Co. Florida December 25th 1874". The actual fort was established 1840 in this area during the Second Seminole War. It was abandoned in 1842 and was occupied on and off by area settlers until it was re-garrisoned briefly in November 1849 and finally abandoned the next month. In 1875 a developer created a housing subdivision in this area and, despite the Army's spelling, gave it the name of "Fort Reed". The area remained part of Orange County until its inclusion in the newly created Seminole County in 1913. This large, hand-carved postmark is very scarce, a terrific Florida postal marking. SOLD

Carpenter to A. J. Stewart, a wealthy NYC retailer, soliciting financial support for her home for needy boys, three of whom she notes attended Harvard.
