tied, with YOKAHAMA JAPAN NOV 7 postmark on cover to Lynn, MA
with manuscript "Alaska" ship directive. Cover roughly reduced at
left affecting the SAN FRANCISCO STEAMSHIP NOV 30 transit mark.
Cover contains personal letter dated Nov. 2, 1872 (image
1, image 2,
transcription), to sender's
friend. It mentions the U. S. Grant/Horace Greely presidential
election, but mostly discusses the correspondents' shared
acquaintances and sender's situation abroad. Still interesting. |

circular mail envelope having been held for postage. Unusual and
scarce. [Note: When the stamp is examined under bright back light
there appears to be a positive outline of a blue CINCINNATI double
oval killer only on the stamp that I cannot explain.] |

at right and small corner bend. Use of this 1876 Centennial
postmark on mail to foreign destinations is quite scarce. |
