#279B tied by "?-98 Philadelphia Pa.
10AM" oval emergency duplex datestamp device on VF small
locally used cover with original
content. This is an extremely rare example of the
emergency hand-cancelers supplied by the POD early in 1898.
Their creation was due to the lack of sufficient and efficient
production to service newly established offices and Spanish
American War related military camps, in addition to replacement
of worn out devices requested by existing offices. Article
by K. F. Olson describing this matter and additional
illustrative examples accompany. |
