9020 #406, fine, sound, canceled by VERA CRUZ, MEXICO MAY ?0 1914 APMC postmark and flag killer on intact soldier letter from Lieut. D. B. Sanger to Cambridge, MA. According to Langford's Flag Cancel Encyclopedia, the earliest acceptable reported date of use is MAY 11. He also discusses how double date numeral specimens can have partial and unprinted numerals (as evidenced with this cover) that can make some dates appear earlier. Based upon close examination of high resolution scans of the postmark, I believe this is most likely a MAY 30 date, still a scarce first month non-philatelic use. $50
