Curran Consignment (#5): Stationery, Cards, Other

Off Cover Stamps Early Issues 1861-67 and 1869 Issues Banknote Issues Stationery, Cards, Other Postage Due
Item # Description Price Picture
c387 #U9, fine, intact entire, "Naglesville, Pa. July 28th" manuscript postmark (DPO Monroe Count, 1830-1866), the indicia canceled by multiple manuscript cross-hatching on just Washington's portrait, which also includes a hat atop Washington's head and a pipe with flowing smoke in his mouth. Obviously, this small town's postmaster enjoyed his artistry and had much time on his hands (and likely little mail) on which to practice. A wonderful, whimsical manuscript cancellation. (Enlarged canceled indicia.) $100
c355 #U1, neatly opened at left, with magenta ink Perry Centre N.Y. Nov 11 manuscript postmark and the entire's indicium canceled by outlining Washington's embossed portrait in the same magenta ink. A very unusual manuscript cancellation and example of postmaster's doodling artistry. SOLD
c356 #U59, VF bank correspondence entire, canceled by green BURLINGTON N.J. OCT 2 postmark and quartered cork killer, Mechanics National Bank corner advertisement, sent to Penn National Bank, Philadelphia. $35

$30

c354 #UX3, VF, bearing a superb strike of blue, incised letter A size 3 bottle stopper killer with CHICAGO APR 14 [1874] postmark (Berg NA3-17). A great example of this unusual killer. SOLD
c321 #U227 2¢ red Plimpton entire of 1882-86, VF neatly opened at right, bearing a superb detailed strike of a dragon killer with NORTHAMPTON MASS. MAR 31 postmark on Overseers of the Poor preprinted envelope. Less detailed strikes of this killer have typically been referred to as a "swan" (Cole Bi-26, Whitfield 489). The offered cover, which bears a complete strike showing the tail and horn of the dragon, was documented in the USCC NEWS May 2007 issue #263, p. 99 and has a clean APEX certificate attesting to the "dragon" designation. Great fancy cancel! $200

$175

c299 #250 2¢ general issue with #236 8¢ Columbian commemorative issue, fine sound copies, tied by XF strike of purple PUEBLO, COLO. REGISTERED. DEC 5 1894 postmark and two strikes of large purple letter "R" killer on VF intact cover from the Office of County Commissioner to New Hampshire. Extremely attractive and unusual late 19th century 8¢ registry rate cover from western state. $75
c300 #267, #272, fine sound copies paying postage and 8¢ registry, SOUTH HANSON MASS. DEC 14 1896 postmark (DPO Plymouth County 1846-1940 when town became "Hanson") and two XF simplex strikes of very unusual killer consisting of letter "E" extending into a square "spiral" (Whitfield 5647) on VF intact cover to Boston, MA (purple oval registry receiver on back). Joshua E. Josselyn was postmaster 1881-1901. Cover with a few tears on reverse. Scarce registered mail with attractive fancy killer. $75

$65

c270 #U311, fine intact entire, DANFORTH, ME SEP 20 postmark (1893 docketing at left, Washington County 1871-) with a superb strike of negative letter "D" in notched circle with internal numeral "4", the combination being a unique and clever mnemonic for the town name ("Dan 4th"). Cover intact, opening cut at left. An absolutely fabulous Maine town name killer, the likes of which I have never before encountered. WOW! SOLD
c272 #UO54, intact 3¢ War Department Plimpton entire on blue, bearing a VF strike of double ring MAINEVILLE OHIO JUL 1 1885 postmark duplexed to a very unusual 4-ring target killer with an oblong internal capital letter "O", most likely representing the state name. Washington D.C. JUL 2 1885 receiver on back. $30

$25

c231 #UX3, VF, sound, canceled by an XF early strike of blue boxed rectangle with diagonal crossbar killer (Berg GEO-10), CHICAGO ILL. SEP 9 (1875, 2 days earlier than Berg reports) postmark, sent to Pana, IL. Card reverse has a printed receipt notification for The Johnston Harvester Co. This is a gem example of a very scarce Chicago blue fancy cancellation. SOLD
c090 #W120, fine intact wrapper entire, canceled by an XF strike of letters "MB" killer (Cole ML-64) postmarked MYSTIC BRIDGE, CONN., 29 MAR. This is the only wrapper that I have ever encountered bearing this fancy town name multi-letter killer. Cover ex-Barkhausen. $45

$40

c034 #UX5, F-VF, canceled by an exceptional, bold donut killer with the negative letters "E" and "J". The letters represent the name of the town EAST JAFFREY, N.H. (DPO Cheshire County 1846-1956). The card is datelined "Jaffrey, FEB 28, 1877" on reverse. Unusual in that the card lacks postmark. This spectacular town-name killer is unlisted in major references. SOLD
