Curran Consignment (#1): Off Cover Stamps

Off Cover Stamps Early Issues 1861-67 and 1869 Issues Banknote Issues Stationery, Cards, Other Postage Due
Item # Description Price Picture
c237 #1, 5¢ red brown first issue, early impression, bearing a superb SOTN strike of red Hudson River Mail 17 bar in circle killer (Skinner-Eno SD-G 53). Stamp margins touch left and bottom, are clear on top and wide at right but curving in at bottom. There is a small tone spot at upper left, but the stamp is otherwise bright, fresh, and without thins or creases. A terrific example of a very difficult first issue cancellation. SOLD
c365 #7, F-VF+, sound, margins clear on three sides, touching at top, bearing a VF strike of red NEW YORK CITY 13-bar square grid killer. The grid in red was basically used only during the July 1-3, 1851 period. July 3 saw uses in both red and black. (See USPCS Chronicle, November 2005, p. 277.) Chase, p. 347, reports the red grid as late as July 19, 1851, however the consignor has never seen examples later than July3. Rare, and a beautiful 1 cent 1851 issue, illustrated in the cited Chronicle article. SOLD
c366 #7, fine, sound horizontal strip of 3, each stamp separately canceled by a VF strike of New York City black 13 bar square grid killer. (This particular example is illustrated in Figure 6 and discussed on p. 276 of USPCS Chronicle, November 2005.) Attractive and scarce cancellation multiple. $300
c360 #10A, all margins clear to just touching at top, small corner bend at upper left and two pin prick impressions at lower left, stamp canceled by a VF strike of blue "WOODSTOCK Vt. OCT 28 / 3 PAID" postmark. This straight line 3 PAID marking is listed and illustrated in Simpson's/Alexander pp. 98-99 with a scarcity rating of 4. Fresh and bright. $60
c359 #11A, fine, sound with three clear margins, just in at top, canceled by a VF-XF strike "U. S. EXPRESS MAIL EASTPORT" route agent postmark. Towle (U.S. Route and Station Agent Postmarks, Mobile Post Office Society, 1986) lists the EASTPORT markings (A-1-g, this having the larger 19mm lettering) with a different font for "U. S. EXPRESS MAIL" from the lists for the "BOSTON" and "ST. JOHNS" route agent postmarks (A-1-h/i). These are all considered rare (Towle IX rating), but the offered example, not previously listed, must be extremely rare, if not unique. A terrific 1851 issue cancellation. $150
c361 #11A, VF and sound, all margins clear, bearing an XF SOTN strike of "NEW-YORK SHIP" dated postmark (USPCS Skinner-Eno update classification PM-SH 5), used on both incoming and outgoing mail. A very nice example. SOLD
c362 #11A, fine, margines clear to touching at left, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of "NEW YORK 5 Cts FEB 9" postmark. This marking is unusual on the 3 cent 1851 issue stamp. It typically was used on letters that were sent at the unpaid 5 cent collect rate. Scarce usage as a killer. $40
c363 #11a, fine, sound copy, margins clear to just in at bottom, bearing a VF-XF SOTN strike of "NEW-YORK JUL 22 1853" year-dated postmark, recorded used from July 11 to 25, 1853, which is thought by some to be connected to the 1853 Crystal Palace Exhibition. The stamp has a clear horizontal stitch watermark. Scarce and desirable postmark, listed in Simpson's/Alexander pp. 84-5. $100
c364 #11, VF, sound, all margins clear, tied on piece by a VF strike of CHICOPEE, MA entwined 6 point star killer (Skinner-Eno ST-6P 23), pos. 47L7 noted on reverse. A nice example of this popular fancy cancel, very difficult to locate on the 1851 issue imperforate stamp. SOLD
c368 #24, fine, sound, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of red double circle "U.S. MAIL CITY DELIVERY 1 MAY 1" carrier postmark, very scarce so well struck, the best Roger has ever encountered. Great eye appeal. SOLD
c369 #26, VF, tiny corner bend at upper left, otherwise sound, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of "St. Ls. & Kk. STEAMERS JUN 24" postmark. This is a rare ca. 1856 steamboat route agent postmark (Towle N-12-c, IX rarity). A remarkable cancellation on this stamp. $100
c326 #94 F grill, F-VF, bearing an XF-superb SOTN strike of "arrow and crescent" killer of WEST POINT, MISS. (Skinner-Eno PO-Cr 13). A 2023 PFC accompanies ("GENUINE", killer source and no faults mentioned, but a short perf at bottom right is noted). This is one of the rarest and most spectacular killers from this small Mississippi town (I am aware of only two covers, one PF certified, bearing strikes and have seen no other off-cover examples). A fantastic 1867 issue fancy cancel for the finest collection. SOLD
c374 #63, fine, sound vertical pair tied on piece by "NEW-YORK PAID JAN 21" [inverted date] with bar postmark. Unusual. Probable foreign mail cancellation. $75
c370 #65, fine, sound, canceled by an XF strike of negative "OHIO" killer (Skinner-Eno LC-WD 8). This stamp is ex Eno, realizing $190 in Frajola's 1/25/1986 auction, lot126, of the Eno collection. A very rare killer, the source of the Skinner-Eno tracing. SOLD
c372 #65, XF, sound, canceled by an XF SOTN incised star of David cancellation. An identical example of this unattributed killer is shown on the USPCS Skinner-Eno update, designated ST-6Px, possibly from New Haven, CT, which used numerous similar stars. This killer is particularly notable for an internal star of David around the central small positive hexagon. A terrific looking star-canceled stamp. SOLD
c371 #65, fine, sound, fresh, strong perfs, bearing an XF strike of WOONSOCKET FALLS, RI barred "NIX" killer (Skinner-Eno LC-WD 7), a premium example. SOLD
c373 #65, VF, sound, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of brilliant red "NEW YORK CITY OCT 23" postmark. Such postmarks were typically used to cancel local drop letter mail and is more commonly struck on the 2 cent Jackson. Pretty stamp, great eye appeal. SOLD
c375 #65, F+, sound SE horizontal pair tied on piece by a superb strike of "NEW-YORK 1863 MAY 1" double ring postmark duplexed to a fantastic strike of geometric hollow 8-wedge fancy killer. This cancellation approximates the Skinner-Eno GE-C10 tracing but is significantly larger matching Milgram's NY122 May 2 illustration, a wonderful example. SOLD
c358 #65, fine, sound, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of skull face killer of Cambridge, MA (Skinner-Eno PH-M 32). A terrific period fancy cancellation. SOLD
c327 #65, F+, perf thin at bottom left, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of negative anchor fancy killer of Cooperstown, NY (Skinner-Eno PO-An 21). Great eye appeal. $100
c328 #65, fine, corner crease at bottom right, bearing a superb SOTN strike of blue negative Masonic square and compass fancy killer of Brattleboro, VT (Skinner-Eno FR-M3a 17). Wonderful example of this cancel. $120
c330 #65, F-VF, internal wrinkle, canceled by a clear black strike of black WELLS FARGO oval cancellation with "NO" the first two letters of town. SOLD
c376 #114, VF-XF, sound, bearing a VF-XF strike of the WATERBURY, CT "holly sprig" fancy cancel (Rohloff L-4, RRR rarity, tracing). A beautiful, fresh stamp and cancellation. 2025 PFC, "Genuine", PF graded VF-XF 85. SOLD
c378 #152, F+, single nibbed perf at bottom left, otherwise sound, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of "NEW YORK REGISTERED FEB 24" postmark. Scarce cancellation, bright and fresh stamp. $100
c377 #153, XF jumbo copy, nice color, with a VF strike of rimless "NEW YORK REGISTERED APR 2" postmark. 2025 PFC, "light vertical crease", still PF graded "XF 90 J". An impressive stamp despite the minor fault, rarely found this well centered with such large margines and scarce cancellation. $150
c287 #159, VF, sound, bearing a superb strike of fancy NYFM geometric killer (Weiss GE-EN8). Killer used for 2 months and difficult to locate this well struck. This example is far superior to the 6¢ example pictured in Weiss. An absolute gem NYFM item. SOLD
c286 #159, fine, canceled by a superb SOTN strike of fancy NYFM 5-point shaded star killer (Weiss ST-5P3). This killer had a short, 1 month+ life span and is very difficult to locate this well struck. This particular stamp is ex-Weiss, pictured on p. 152 of his book. Stamp has a light, pressed corner crease at bottom left. A wow NYFM item. $125

$100

c380 #158, VF-XF, sound and fresh, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of negative "POD" [Post Office Department] killer. Cancel is unlisted in major references. Previous owner has penciled on reverse "Whitehall N.Y.", a town which has produced similar appearing killers. An outstanding cancellation item. SOLD
c332 #147, fine, tiny perf extension at upper right, an XF strike of negative anchor with large loop at top fancy killer, unlisted in major references. $45

$35

c289 #157, fine, sound, bearing an XF SOTN 100% strike of big nosed man profile fancy cancel of New York City (Cole J0-133/4/5, Whitfield 37). As shown in the provided tracing, the killer appears to demonstrates an outline of the face and is not solid as catalog tracings generally show. All reported uses of this killer pair with a NYC local mail postmark dated AUG 10. An exceptionally scarce face killer and condition rarity. SOLD

c381 #184, F+, sound with 3 large margins, bearing a superb SOTN strike of the number "79" year date killer of MATTAPOISETT, MA (Whitfield 4893). A terrific example of this year date cancellation. SOLD
c382 #184, VF+ SE copy, sound, bearing an XF-superb SOTN strike of negative "79" year date killer of PRINCETON, IL (Whitfield 4838). Pretty stamp and cancellation. SOLD
c333 #158, fine, nibbed perfs at top, canceled by a VF strike of rare stencil "76" centennial year date killer of Curwinsville, PA (Cole YD-60, Whitfield 4863). $60

$50

c337 #207, fine, tiny thin, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of extremely scarce negative "83" year date killer of NASHVILLE, TENN. (Cole YD-145, Whifield 4846), believed to be a New Years day celebration cancellation. The killer just jumps out at you! SOLD
c338 #207, tiny fault, bearing a superb SOTN of small pumpkin face/mask fancy killer, unlisted in major references. Neat! $60

$50

c383 #279B, fine, sound lower left booklet pane single, 2 straight edges, tied on piece by a superb strike of large, fancy "[Andrew J.] MORRISON S" directional railroad agent name killer with "RUTLAND & TROY R.P.O. SEP 24 1900" postmark (Towle 44-G-3, 28mm). SOLD
c392 #279B, fine, sound, tied on piece by an XF strike of "EMERGENCY STAMP" in oval cancellation. This very unusual killer is a railway post office (RPO) marking. It is listed in "The United States Railway Post Office Postmark Catalog" (Towle & McDonald, Mobile Post Office Society) as marking 49-F-1. As noted in the catalog, "Used by first Division, RMS, on any route in the division, when postmarker was missing due to wreck, flood, clerks not reporting, etc. First Division include most lines in New England." I have previously encountered two covers to Pittsfield, ME each bearing this postal marking, both from the same correspondence, one dated FEB 5, 1902. Quite a scarce and impressive, showy postal marking. $75
c341 #220, VF, sound, bearing a VF-XF SOTN strike of numeral "7" in circle of MANCHESTER CENTER, VT. (Whitfield 6458, Salkind NUM-7-1). Scarce. $45
